About Light Painting

Light Painting is an alternative way of creating a photographic exposure  when there is no light, such as an underground canal, tunnel or cave.

Light Painting Photography is the Art Form of using handheld lights to paint and/or draw in a scene while the shutter of a camera is left open during a long exposure photograph. The camera needs to be on a tripod and the shutter needs to open and stay open while the camera’s sensor receives just the right amount of the painted light to create a usable exposure. 

To create each image my assistant (Nigel Grim – cinematographer and fellow lover of creative lighting) and I spent a whole day underground in pitch black working with powerful torches, battery operated LED lighting and coloured gels. Each image is a blend of on average 3 separate long exposures, each exposure we painted with different light sources and different coloured gels. This is one of many unusual photography jobs I have been commissioned to shoot during my career.
